This introductory course is designed for individuals and teams who are new to process design and mapping. Whether you’re working in operations, administration, project management, or service delivery, this course will equip you with the tools and confidence to understand, document, and improve the way work gets done.
No prior experience is required—just a willingness to explore how processes shape your organisation and how small changes can lead to meaningful improvements.
Rather than relying on lengthy textbooks or complex methodologies, we use practical tools and real-world examples, discussing and using the tools together. We do not focus on specific IT systems, as there are many available – rather, the course content introduces practical, core process mapping and design expertise which can be applied to many situations.
This interactive learning approach ensures participants leave with a clear grasp of the fundamentals of effective process design and mapping—ready to apply them immediately.
What you will learn:
- Outcomes vs outputs – and how one enables the other
- Understand what a process is and why it matters
- Identify the key components of a process (inputs, outputs, roles, steps, decisions)
- Use practical tools like flowcharts, swim lane diagrams and other models
- Guided mapping practice
- Map current (“as-is”) processes clearly and consistently
- Spot duplication, inefficiencies, risks, and improvement opportunities
- Design better (“to-be”) processes that are leaner, clearer, and more user-friendly
- Facilitate process mapping sessions with confidence
Why It Matters
Processes are everywhere—from onboarding a new employee to responding to a customer query. Yet many organisations run on undocumented, inconsistent, or outdated ways of working. This course helps you bring clarity, consistency, and improvement to your everyday operations.
You’ll leave with practical skills, not just theory—ready to map your first process and start making meaningful changes.
Who is this course for?
- Colleagues in operations, quality, or service delivery and / or improvement roles
- Team leaders or managers seeking to improve work processes and drive improved outcomes
- Anyone involved in projects, audits, or service redesign for whom process mapping and design can be of help

Introducing Alex
A highly experienced programme director, transformation lead, and senior leader, Alex has spent over fifteen years in senior leadership and consultancy roles with major commercial organisations, including KPMG Consulting. He also brings extensive experience from the NHS and social care, where he has led transformation and programme initiatives—particularly focused on health and social care integration at place level.
Process design and mapping is a core part of Alex’s expertise. He facilitates groups to map current flows and design future processes that better align with organisational outcomes and improvement goals.
On this course, Alex brings models and methods to life—drawing on practical examples from his own career and tailoring content to the interests of each group. Participants gain not only a clear understanding of the frameworks introduced, but—crucially—learn how to apply them effectively in practice
