One of the well documented consequences of lockdown has been the cancellation of school exams and the pressures on teachers and schools to develop robust systems for determining grades for students.  A local former teacher has worked with a number of local businesses to come up with a solution for A Level Chemistry teachers.  Steve Smith has been working as a full-time online private tutor since January 2019 via his business Online Chemistry tutor and at the end of 2020 he launched his new project: KimiQuiz.
“I had this idea of an online application for A Level Chemistry students for quite a while.  A place where they could set themselves short multiple choice questions and use them to identify areas of weakness and track progress.  On the back of a successful year in 2019 providing online chemistry tuition, I felt that the time had come to make this idea a reality.  Work started in February 2020 and KimiQuiz was born at the end of the year.  I worked and continue to work with local businesses on this project: Marimosa built the application, Lucky Six Marketing take care of the social media presence and Utter Creatives designed the branding.
At this time, KimiQuiz has over 1000 questions in the database with more being added periodically.   The application has a number of levels of functionality, for instance A Level Chemistry students can use it independently of schools if they so wish.  Once they have created a user profile they can set themselves short tests covering any or all of the topics in their A Level syllabus.  When they register they are required to specify which syllabus they are following (AQA, OCR or Edexcel).  The quiz creation page is then configured to reflect the specification, which gives the application a bespoke and familiar appearance.  Their first two chemistry quizzes are free so they can try before they buy.
We can set up student, teacher and head of department profiles for school cohorts on request.  The teacher profiles allow a class teacher to view the question database by topic and create quizzes for their students which automatically appear on the student profile page.  The teacher is then notified once the quizzes have been completed and a breakdown of performance by student and class is created.  The head of department has access to all student performance statistics for all teacher set quizzes.  In the current era of school based assessments, I know that KimiQuiz could be a very useful asset for both students and schools.”
