Kirkham Grammar School has gone straight to the top of the class after becoming the first school to sign up to the new Young Chamber of Commerce.
The programme is one launched by the North & Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce and is one which schools and colleges within the Chamber’s area can join to boost prospects for pupils and students.
Young Chamber is a national scheme run locally by chambers of commerce with accreditation from the British Chambers of Commerce; it aims to provide young people with a real understanding about business, jobs, careers and the range of opportunities that exist once they leave education.
“I’m thrilled that Kirkham Grammar School has become the first Young Chamber member,” said Hayley Topselvi, the Young Chamber co-ordinator.
“I’m sure this will be the start of a long and profitable partnership between both organisations; hopefully that success can inspire other groups to join Young Chamber. I look forward to working alongside Kirkham to offer the best possible opportunities and inspiration to our entrepreneurs of tomorrow.”

Babs Murphy, the Chamber’s Chief Executive, added: “Young Chamber is another string to our bow and one which I’m sure will be of great benefit to those organisations which sign up.”
Lorraine Hargreaves, Kirkham Grammar School’s Head of Economics & Business Studies and Head of Careers, said: “We recognise the need for schools not to just look at the successful outcome of education as simply results, grades and potential for Higher Education, but to ensure that we prepare our young men and women for the world at work by recognising the importance of quality and impartial career guidance for young people.
“Our exciting partnership with the Young Chamber of Commerce will give our pupils access to and help develop the range of employability skills that employers look for in their future employees.
“Importantly, the Young Chamber will provide a conduit for our pupils to meet with local businesses and talk about their industry sectors and areas of expertise, which will provide our young people to make more informed decisions about their future directions.”
