About this event
In response to escalating supply chain pressures, the Chamber Low Carbon team introduced the Destination Net Zero programme giving them the background to Net Zero and providing them with support to identify their carbon emissions, calculate their greenhouse gas inventory (carbon footprint and produce a carbon reduction plan in line with the Cabinet Office’s template.
Responding to the IPCC 6th Assessment Synthesis Report the Low Carbon Team has updated and revamped to the Destination Net Zero support to Mach II – The Need for Speed!
The support consists of:
Half day workshop covering:
- What is Net Zero
- The difference between Net Zero and Carbon Neutrality
- How to identify and map your greenhouse gas emissions
- Where to get your activity data from
- How to calculate your carbon footprint
- How to devise your carbon reduction plan
- How to present your carbon reduction plan
Supporting materials provided:
- Simple Excel based greenhouse gas inventory calculation tool.
- Sector specific guidance/suggested actions
- Editable Carbon Reduction Plan (in accordance with PPN 6/21 Guidance)
Further ongoing support and help to calculate your carbon footprint and carbon reduction plan if required.
Global Context
March 23rd, 2023, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its Synthesis Report integrating the various components of the 6th Assessment Report from which a key message was.
“Mainstreaming effective and equitable climate action will not only reduce losses and damages for nature and people, it will also provide wider benefits,” said IPCC Chair Hoesung Lee. “This Synthesis Report underscores the urgency of taking more ambitious action and shows that, if we act now, we can still secure a liveable sustainable future for all.”
In 2018, IPCC highlighted the unprecedented scale of the challenge required to keep warming to 1.5°C. Five years later, that challenge has become even greater due to a continued increase in greenhouse gas emissions. The pace and scale of what has been done so far, and current plans, are insufficient to tackle climate change.
UK Context
In June 2019 the UK government amended the Climate Change Action 2008 from an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 1990 levels to the UK being Net Zero by 2050 and thereby being the first major economy to bring Net Zero legislation into law.
One mechanism to achieve the above introduced by the Government in June 2021 was Procurement Policy Note PPN 06/21 Taking account of carbon reduction plans in the procurement of major government contracts, (£5m and above), as it started to permeate through the Government and public sector contracts.
Move forward to today, the NHS has updated its Net Zero Supplier Roadmap requiring all procurements to have a carbon reduction plan from April 2024, from April 2027 all suppliers will be required to publicly report targets, and emissions and publish a Carbon Reduction Plan for global emissions aligned to the NHS net zero target, for all of their Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
From April 2028: new requirements will be introduced overseeing the provision of carbon foot printing for individual products supplied to the NHS.
From 2030: suppliers will only be able to qualify for NHS contracts if they can demonstrate their progress through published progress reports and continued carbon emissions reporting through the Evergreen sustainable supplier assessment.
The Chamber Low Carbon Team will be holding a series of in person and on-line events.
