Blackpool and The Fylde College is hosting a summer festival of learning to support ambitious local people ready to change careers.
Flying Start – https://blackpool.ac.uk/highereducation/flying-start – is a series of workshops hosted by B&FC’s Higher Education Learning Mentors to get people ready for September degree-level courses.
Sessions run from 10 to 21 August covering a wide range of topics.
“Never a better time to develop yourself”
Claire Frost, Marketing Director of Blackpool and The Fylde College, (pictured) said: “We have already seen how people adapted during lockdown to learn new skills and find alternative jobs.
“We’re hearing from people emerging from lockdown with fresh inspiration to change or improve their career – to fulfil a long-held dream or out of necessity because they may have lost their job. There’s never been a better time to develop yourself – and B&FC has the courses and expertise to help make that happen.”
The college said it was also expecting to receive more higher education applications from people preferring to study locally rather than further afield as a result of the pandemic.
Claire added: “We believe many people will think it’s safer to study for a degree in their local area – living at home and attending a college with a smaller campus with smaller class sizes.
“Our learning and teaching remains as vibrant as ever and attendance during the new academic year will be carefully managed to promote everyone’s health, safety and wellbeing.”
Tutors at the college are already experienced in delivering ‘blended learning’ – the combination of flexible in-class and distance learning – thanks to its thriving online community and team of friendly, remote learning specialists.
Theory-based sessions and assessments will be delivered mostly online via the college’s mobile-enabled virtual learning platform and Microsoft Teams.
These will be supported by socially distanced small-group teaching and assessments on campus, with the provision that these can be adjusted in line with the latest government advice.
The majority of degree programmes at Blackpool and The Fylde College are awarded by Lancaster University.
