UK and Ukraine Sign Groundbreaking AI Partnership to Advance Defence Innovation

Published: 07/09/26

The UK and Ukraine have signed a landmark Artificial Intelligence (AI) Partnership designed to accelerate the development of next-generation defence technologies and strengthen collaboration on national security innovation.

The agreement, signed in Kyiv by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, marks a significant milestone in the growing relationship between the two nations and forms part of the wider UK-Ukraine 100 Year Partnership.

A key feature of the deal will see the UK become the first international partner granted access to Ukraine’s highly regarded Avengers AI Labs. The platform provides access to extensive real-world battlefield data gathered through thousands of daylight cameras and infrared sensors deployed across Ukraine.

The system captures and analyses millions of data points relating to military assets and activities, including tanks, artillery systems, air defence equipment, infantry movements, drones and reconnaissance UAVs. This information is then used to train advanced AI models capable of supporting military operations and enhancing decision-making capabilities.

The new partnership will combine Britain’s world-leading AI ecosystem, renowned research institutions and technology expertise with Ukraine’s operational experience, engineering talent and innovative approach to defence technology.

Initially focused on defence and national security applications, the collaboration will bring together academics, engineers, businesses and military specialists from both countries to develop AI-driven solutions to shared security challenges. However, officials believe the technologies and innovations emerging from the partnership could also deliver wider societal benefits, with potential applications in areas such as transport management, infrastructure and public services.

For UK researchers and technology companies, access to Avengers AI Labs offers a unique opportunity to work with one of the world’s most extensive collections of real-world operational data. The partnership is expected to accelerate the development, testing and deployment of advanced AI systems in practical environments.

In return, Ukraine will benefit from access to the UK’s extensive research capabilities, leading universities, technology firms and one of the world’s largest AI ecosystems. The collaboration aims to transform battlefield experience and unique datasets into long-term technological advancements that can benefit both nations.

The announcement follows further UK support for Ukraine’s defence sector, including measures to enhance cooperation on advanced military capabilities and technology development.

The AI Partnership represents a significant step forward in defence innovation, reinforcing the commitment of both countries to work together in developing cutting-edge technologies to address future security challenges.
