CPTPP enters into force between Canada and the UK on September 1, 2026

Published: 27/08/26

Trade between the United Kingdom and Canada is set to enter a new phase on 1st September 2026, when the UK’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) officially comes into force between the two countries.

The milestone follows Canada’s completion of its domestic ratification process, allowing businesses in both nations to begin trading under CPTPP preferences from the September implementation date.

The agreement will sit alongside the existing UK-Canada Trade Continuity Agreement, providing companies with an additional route to access preferential trading terms. For UK exporters, this could mean reduced or eliminated tariffs on a range of eligible goods, depending on product classifications and the applicable tariff schedules.

Trade specialists have noted that businesses wishing to benefit from the new arrangements will need to ensure their products meet CPTPP rules of origin requirements and verify the correct commodity codes before claiming preferential treatment.

A key advantage of the agreement is its cumulation provisions, which offer greater flexibility for manufacturers operating across international supply chains. Under CPTPP rules, materials and components sourced from other member countries can, in certain circumstances, count towards the originating status of a UK-made product.

This is expected to be particularly beneficial for British manufacturers that source inputs from CPTPP economies such as Japan, Australia and Mexico before exporting finished products to Canada. The provisions could help businesses strengthen supply chain resilience while maintaining access to preferential tariff treatment.

Beyond trade in goods, CPTPP includes commitments covering a broad range of economic activities, including services, investment, digital trade, government procurement and investor-state dispute settlement. These measures are designed to create a more predictable and transparent business environment for companies seeking to expand internationally.

Business groups and exporters are expected to examine the opportunities presented by the agreement as implementation approaches. With Canada becoming another CPTPP market fully accessible to UK firms under the partnership, the agreement is seen as an important step in deepening commercial ties and opening new avenues for growth across both economies.

The UK’s participation in CPTPP is part of a broader strategy to strengthen trade links with fast-growing markets across the Asia-Pacific region while enhancing existing relationships with key partners, including Canada. As the agreement takes effect, businesses on both sides of the Atlantic will gain access to a wider framework aimed at supporting trade, investment and long-term economic cooperation.
