Preston continues to demonstrate strong economic performance, with high levels of productivity and output, highlighting the city’s growing reputation as a resilient centre for business and innovation in the UK, according to a new report.
The Centre For Cities ‘Cities Outlook’ report sees Preston enter the top 20 UK destinations for output and productivity, way ahead of neighbouring, larger cities, such as Manchester and Liverpool.
Businesses across Preston continue to produce a high volume of goods and services, contributing significantly to local and regional economic growth.
This strong output reflects the city’s diverse economy, spanning advanced manufacturing, professional services, digital businesses, education and healthcare. These sectors are driving sustained production that supports local jobs, investment and long-term prosperity.
Alongside it’s impressive output levels, the cities productivity levels remain robust, with businesses using labour, technology and capital efficiencies to maximise output.
Local employers are increasingly adopting modern working practices, investing in skills development and embracing innovation. This focus on efficiencies helps local businesses remain competitive.
Babs Murphy, Chief Executive of the North & Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, said: “Preston has historically been a leader in business and productivity, serving as a pioneering centre during the Industrial Revolution.
“It’s truly inspiring to see the city continue to advance, surpassing many larger towns and cities in performance, especially considering the ongoing challenges within the business environment”.
The city’s success is supported by a skilled and motivated workforce, strong partnerships between businesses and education providers and continued investment in infrastructure.
Preston’s central location and excellent transport links further enable firms to operate efficiently and access markets across the UK.
Councillor Matthew Brown, Leader of Preston City Council, said: “We are proud to see Preston recognised as one of the UK’s leading centres for economic performance, and we remain focused on supporting further growth, attracting investment and ensuring the city continues to be a great place to live, work and do business.
“We have been able to achieve significant impact to the local economy in the city through the ‘Preston model’. We want to build a richer and more democratic economy in Preston through initiatives like the real living wage and growing our cooperative economy.”
High productivity and output bring clear benefits to the local economy, including stronger business performance, increased confidence among investors and greater opportunities for wage growth. These factors help create a positive cycle of economic development, ensuring Preston remains an attractive place to work, invest and do business.
As Preston continues to build on these strengths, the city is well positioned to support future growth, encourage innovation and maintain its role as a key contributor to the UK economy.
