Lancashire’s business community has been urged to pull together in testing economic times, at a major business event in the county.
The president of the North & Western Lancashire Chamber Commerce told members at its annual general meeting (AGM) that tough times can present unique opportunities for businesses.
Dawn Cheetham MBE, addressed more than 100 members of the Chamber ahead of a keynote speech delivered by the leader of Lancashire County Council, Stephen Atkinson, who called for support for the business community from government.
He added: “My administration’s priority is making sure Lancashire’s growth is something people can see and feel in their own communities. We’re working closely with local businesses and residents because real progress doesn’t happen in isolation. The investments we’re driving are about creating good jobs, backing ambition and making sure every part of Lancashire has the chance to move forward.
“Our plans are ambitious, but they’re based on the strengths of this county and the people who live and work here. From the Growth Plan to the opportunities created by the National Cyber Force, we’re focused on turning potential into practical benefits. That means staying close to our business community, listening to local people and making decisions that support Lancashire’s long-term future.”
At the annual Presidents Lunch and AGM, held this year at Park Hall Hotel and Spa, Mrs Cheetham urged the government not to tax businesses more in the upcoming Budget, which will be delivered next week.
She added: “We believe that fostering a supportive environment for enterprise is essential for economic recovery and growth.
“Together, through dialogue, advocacy and innovation, we can navigate these turbulent times and lay the groundwork for a brighter, more sustainable future for our businesses and our community.”
Issues such as the ongoing skills gap in Lancashire, supporting the community of small and medium-sized businesses in the county and the future of local governance was also addressed throughout the speech.
Mrs Cheetham added: “Our collective efforts in community engagement, charitable support and educational initiatives exemplify our commitment not just to economic growth but also to the well-being of our region.
“As we look ahead, let us remember that our strength lies in unity and cooperation. Together, we can build on these achievements, foster new opportunities and continue shaping a successful future for our local businesses and community and their employees.”
